P&I Claims

This section provides a general guide to steps you should take in the event of potential Protection and Indemnity claims on your policy and also how we typically respond.

Should an accident occur which may result in a claim against you for an injury to your crew, third parties or passengers please inform us or your insurance broker as soon as possible and we will instruct the appropriate people to assist you immediately. As every incident is different, this is not intended to be all-inclusive list and if you are in any doubt then please contact a member of the Claims Department as we will be happy to assist.

Following an incident

Notify Sunderland Marine as soon as possible of any event that may result in a claim on your Policy. This can be done via your insurance broker, direct to the Claims Department or via your local Sunderland Marine branch office.

It is important that we are notified as soon as possible so that we can:

  • Offer immediate advice and assistance.
  • Arrange to obtain statements from any relevant witnesses.
  • Commence the investigation of accidents as soon as possible to preserve evidence.
  • Make a prompt decision regarding liability to determine most appropriate claims handling process.
  • Use of alternative dispute resolution where appropriate.
  • Use of cost containment measures wherever possible.
