Leading Fishing Insurer Sunderland Marine Focuses on Training & Education
Sunderland Marine, the world’s leading international insurer of fishing vessels and aquaculture risks, is focusing on the importance of the education and training of seafarers at the Skipper Expo International show at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 25-26 May.
Over the past 12 months, Sunderland Marine has launched a range of loss prevention initiatives aimed at educating and training seafarers on safety at sea. Commercial fishing remains one of the most hazardous occupations and those who work in the industry face the risk of serious injury or loss of life on a daily basis,’ says Sunderland Marine chief executive officer Tom Rutter.
On the eve of the show, we are sponsoring the Trainee Fisherman of the Year prize of the 2018 Fishing News Awards at the Hilton Treetops Hotel, which reflects our commitment to ensuring that life on-board is as safe as possible and the wellbeing of the crew is of utmost importance.’
The Fishing News award recognises the most outstanding new entrant to complete a commercial fishing training course in 2017. The candidate will have demonstrated high levels of application, commitment, co-operation and understanding of the fishing industry, practical skills and safety awareness.
We are delighted to sponsor this very worthwhile award,’ says Rutter. The three shortlisted candidates are Harry Forsyth, Kirkella H 7, Scottish Maritime Academy, Jonathon Garrett, Our Lass III WY 261, Whitby & District Fishing Industry Training School, and Lee Odie, Mizpah LK 173, NAFC Marine Centre. The quality of their entries is excellent and we wish them all success.’
Sunderland Marine’s popular Safe Out, Safe Home guide, published in October 2016, has already been distributed to fishing vessels worldwide. Aimed primarily at young people joining fishing vessels for the first time, the unique graphic-novel-style guide is designed to give them a quick introduction to the safety training and familiarisation they should receive on board – as well as to prompt skippers to provide this.
Sunderland Marine will be on Skipper Expo stand 36-37 near the main entrance. Tom and the Sunderland Marine team consisting of Craig McBurnie, Michael Thomson, Andrew Carre, David Burke and Alan Ure look forward to seeing you there. The company is also jointly sponsoring a seafood buffet for exhibitors on the first evening of the show.
